When it comes to outdoor projects in Australia, from gates and screens to balustrades and enclosures, the choice of materials is crucial. The harsh Australian climate demands materials that can withstand extreme conditions, from scorching heat to torrential rains. This is where the great debate between aluminium and wood comes into play. While both materials have their merits, aluminium often proves to be the superior choice for a variety of reasons.
Durability and Maintenance Aluminium: In the Australian climate, durability is key. Aluminium stands out due to its resistance to warping, cracking, and swelling under extreme temperatures and moist conditions. This makes it particularly suited to coastal areas where salt spray and high humidity can deteriorate other materials quickly. Aluminium's rust and corrosion resistance means that it remains in pristine condition for years, all with minimal maintenance. Wood: Wood has a timeless appeal, but it requires more upkeep to maintain its integrity, especially in Australia. The sun’s UV rays can fade and degrade wood, while rain and humidity contribute to rot, mold, and mildew. Regular treatments, painting, and staining are necessary to preserve wood, which can be both costly and time-consuming. Aesthetic Flexibility Aluminium: With modern advancements, aluminium can be crafted to suit any aesthetic. At Next Gen Aluminium, we offer products that can mimic the traditional look of wood or cater to a more contemporary design. This versatility is perfect for matching the diverse architectural styles found across Australia, from the classic Queenslander to modern urban homes. Wood: Wood’s natural beauty is undeniable, offering a classic look that many homeowners desire. However, this comes with high maintenance, especially in Australia, where the climate can quickly wear down its appearance without regular care. Cost and Longevity Aluminium: Though aluminium might initially be more expensive than wood, it's an investment that pays off in the Australian context. Its longevity and low maintenance reduce long-term costs significantly. Aluminium installations last decades without the need for replacement, making it a cost-effective choice for the budget-conscious Australian homeowner. Wood: While wood might seem cheaper at first, the ongoing maintenance costs in Australia’s climate can make it more expensive over time. Regular repairs and treatments can add up, making wood less economical in the long run. Environmental Considerations Aluminium: Aluminium is a champion of sustainability, especially important in the environmentally conscious Australian market. It is fully recyclable, with recycled aluminium requiring just 5% of the initial energy needed to produce it. This makes aluminium an excellent choice for those looking to minimize their environmental footprint. Wood: When sustainably sourced, wood is also a good environmental choice. However, the energy needed for regular maintenance and the potential for deforestation can complicate its green credentials. Responsibly sourced and treated wood can mitigate some of these issues. Safety and Security Aluminium: In Australia, where home security is a priority, aluminium offers robust protection. Its strength and resistance to impact make aluminium gates, screens, and fences excellent deterrents against intrusions. Wood: Wood can provide a decent level of security, but it doesn’t match the strength and durability of aluminium. Over time, wood can weaken, compromising its ability to protect. Conclusion Choosing the right material for your outdoor project in Australia is about balancing aesthetics, cost, and performance. Aluminium, with its superior durability, low maintenance, and flexibility, offers distinct advantages over wood, particularly in the Australian climate. At Next Gen Aluminium, we understand these needs and specialize in high-quality aluminium solutions that cater to the diverse preferences and requirements of Australian homeowners. Opt for aluminium to ensure your project stands the test of time and climate, proving both beautiful and functional for years to come. Next Gen Aluminium is proud to be a part of the upgrades currently happening at Rivershore Resort in Bli Bli.
We were tasked with designing a friendly and safe barrier handrail for their new food and drink service van where patrons can safely order and enjoy their food and drinks whilst staying at the resort. What we came up with was this modern and appealing vertical slat balustrade in a powder coated white finish. The top and bottom rails are made with a 70x30 rectangle aluminium box section, the uprights are a 65x16 slat and the bolt down posts are 75x75 with a 10mm base plate. Patrons can easily set their food or drinks on top of the handrail or comfortably lean and rest against the rail while waiting or while having a friendly chat. |
